One Side Done!

Saturday, October 11, 2014

This is going to be a short blog entry mostly because I had a pretty crummy day and most of it is not worth relating. Suffice it to say that I was a little bit tired, not very productive and made a number of careless mistakes. The worst of my mistakes involved spending more than an hour carefully measuring a 14 foot piece of siding before cutting it on the wrong side and completely ruining it. Only then did I finally get the message that it might be time to call it a day (although it was a pretty lousy note to end on).

The bright side of my day was that while I was busy making mistakes, Sheila was busy installing all of the siding that we stained yesterday onto the back of the house. That means the one side of the house is now completely sided which is awesome.

We also installed half the siding on the right side of the house. It’s amazing to me how little time it takes to install siding compared to how long it takes to create and stain it, especially when the boards are being installed at ground level. I think it must have taken about 8 man-hours to create those boards. It only took us about 15 minutes to install them, but man were those 15 minutes rewarding.

Today’s tiny epiphany: pay attention to your spirit. Sometimes it’s hard for me to let go of a day of working on the tiny house I had been looking forward to all week. However, if your body’s telling you it’s time to rest, it’s better to pay attention and take a break then spend your day being frustrated and making mistakes. Remember, you are working with power tools and that should only be done when you’re at your best.

Favorite part of the day: standing in just the right spot on my driveway and imagining what my whole house will look like finished.
